Name: Bottle Rocket Genre: Comedy
Cast: Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson
IMDb URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115734/
This is the Wilson brothers major film debut. Owen co-wrote this one with director Wes Anderson (Rushmore, Royal Tennenbaums). This is one of my favorite movies. It's one of those sweet, goofy comedies you never even heard of. This one's humor is very subtle and you really need to be in a good mood when you watch it.

Name: Stealing Home Genre: Drama
Cast: Mark Harmon, Jodie Foster
IMDb URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096171/
This is a somewhat dark movie in that it deals with a suicide. Billy (Mark Harmon) is left the ashes of long time friend (and one time lover) Katie (Jodie Foster). This movie is about Billy's recollection of Katie and the time they spent together. Billy uses his memories to determine what Katie would have wanted done with her ashes.
This movie has a very nostalgic feel and a great soundtrack.
I have never known anyone that saw this that did not like it.

Name: Same Time, Next Year Genre: Romantic Comedy
Cast: Alan Alda, Ellen Burstyn
IMDb URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078199/
This movie was made in 1978. I just watched it again a few months ago after finding the DVD at Costco for $8.99 US. The movie is 27 years old and it plays as well as it did then. If you can get past the infidelity of the two main characters, this is a great movie. We get to watch these two characters grow old together even though they only see each other one weekend a year over a 30 year span.

Name: Somewhere In Time Genre: Romance
Cast: Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour
IMDb URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081534/
My favorite romance of all time. This little known movie has a huge cult following even to the point where people gather on an annual basis on the island where this was filmed. Here is a link to the biggest fan site:

This movie hooked me in the first 5 minutes. Christopher Reeve is at a play house after his first play has completed its opening. He is among his friends when an elderly lady approaches him, hands him a pocket watch, and pleads "come back to me Richard". When his friends ask who she was, he has no idea. That hooked me.

Name: 'Night, Mother Genre: Drama
Cast: Sissy Spacek, Anne Bancroft
IMDb URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090556/
How do I hook you? Here is the Plot Summary from IMDb:
"What would you do if someone you love sat down with you one night and calmly told you they were going to end their life before morning?"
This movie is very dark as you might guess. It is also mostly dialog...some of the best dialog you will ever hear in a movie. At the beginning of the movie, we see Jessie (Spacek) preparing as if she is going away...maybe for a trip. Later, she makes her devastating announcement to her mother. The movie is about that night and the conversations that take place. The conversations are cruel and perhaps for the first time, honest, as her mother desparately pleads for her daughter to change her mind.
If you liked Million Dollar Baby...you'll love this gem. Better bring some tissue. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Name: And the Band Played On Genre: Drama
Cast: Matthew Modine
IMDb URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106273/
This HBO movie is about the Center for Disease Control's battle against the birth of a new virus, AIDS. One aspect to the movie that I find particularly interesting is that the doctors working on the virus initially anticipate a 3-6 month (don't remember exactly, it's been awhile since I saw it) time period before either being able to prevent it or maybe cure it. I think it shows how AIDS was something truly new to them, and caught them off guard.
